I’m not sure if this applies to the tree picture, but this past spring/summer many trees in the neighborhood were determined to be infected with Dutch Elm Disease. Even though the trees look fine to the untrained eye, they have been slated to be culled out to try and impede the spread of the infection to the elms that are still healthy.

I lost a huge 90 ft tree in front of my house to Dutch Elm a few years ago. Died slowly over many months and was a big loss but there was nothing that could save it, unfortunately.
