I was walking down Monument today only to notice some Civil War reenactors standing guard at the Stonewall Jackson statue in honor of Virginia’s Lee-Jackson Day.
How are you celebrating the holiday?

Interesting. When I stood in the same spot with a protest sign, the Richmond Police Department said they would arrest me.

I’ve seen that happen in all of the four years that I have lived here in Richmond. It isn’t something new.

I really find it interesting the tension that surrounds this weekend.
How do we celebrate the Virginia’s history that is so often associated with something so awful?
I am not naive enough to say that the Civil War was all about slavery. But I am also not naive enough to say that it didn’t have its role. I think it will always be challenging to do so until true racial reconciliation is realized.

I have yet to find another country or war in which they lavish such honor upon the loosing general. Cornwallis Day anyone?
