Creatures ‘n Crooks, a Cary Court fixture since 2003, will close in September. We had previously reported in January that they were experiencing financial troubles.

It’s always sad to see a main stay of Cary Street close. However, fantasy books for kids…could there be a more niche market? I have little kids and we never go in there because we aren’t into those types of stories. It’s a shame, because we like to support local businesses but their focus was so narrow…
That’s so sad!
Chris–It’s not just a bookstore for kids, not at all. They carry fantasy, sci-fi, horror and mystery books for adults and kids, and I’d say they have a lot more adult books than kids.
They’ve hosted events that have brought a few of my favorite authors to Richmond, and I’ll be sorry to see them go.
very sad, i go there for my sci-fi needs but sadly that only translates to three times a year or so.
This is sad news, indeed, and the store wasn’t just for kids. I liked being able to saunter down and pick up the latest William Gibson. Independent bookstores can be treasures, and that Creatures & Crooks made it this far, in such a chain-crazy climate, is to their credit. But unfortunately, this closing is more a reflection of the precarious economic situation than on the business itself. Tough to be a retailer these days.
