Robert E. Lee’s Junk in his Trunk

The Virginia Historical Society recently obtained two wooden trunks containing artifacts pertaining to Virginia’s favorite son, Robert E. Lee. His oldest daughter collected letters and records of her father and stored them in the trunks, which were found in a basement of a bank in Alexandria. According to the RTD, the trunk contains such materials as Lee’s letter announcing Stonewall Jackson’s death and the stars from Lee’s Civil War uniform.

The materials are now available to researchers, and who knows, someday might be available to the public. WOTBN.net has an insider @ VHS and will bring you more on this in the future, including why, in their current exhibit, is Santa Fe listed as one of the three “North American Beginnings” and not St. Augustine?

  4. Also, the newly available Lee papers ARE available to the public- you just have to pay the $5 admission fee and request them in the Reading Room.
