Hey neighbors. If you haven’t registered to vote, or aren’t registered at your current address, get that done by Monday (10/6). As long as it’s postmarked by Monday, you’re golden.

Please help find a nice, safe space for our Fan and Museum District and Malvern Area Dogs!
From Emily…
For several months now, I’ve been taking my dog Sydney to the field at Thompson and Kensington after work. Sydney loves to run around the field and play with other dogs. All of the dogs are very nice and the owners are very respectful. They clean up after their pets and enjoy camaraderie with the other dog owners and the excitement it brings their pets. We know the field officially belongs to the school system and have been respectful of their property. I have never seen a student or group of students on the field but know that I would clear the area if any showed up.
Recently the safety of the field has been compromised. Someone has locked one of the gates permanently open so that dogs could potentially escape and run into traffic on Thompson Street. This is not a safe situation for the dogs, who’s owners do not realize the field’s safety has been obstructed, or drivers on a relatively busy road. Please help us make sure the field can be enjoyed safely by people and their pets.
Moreover, please consider using your voice to make the field a permanent dog park. The Fan, Museum District and Malvern Area are home to many dog lovers who love their neighborhoods and their pets. The sacrifice yard space to live in a vibrant neighborhood. These individuals stay in a neighborhood with some of the highest home values in the city and an excellent quality of life in part because they want to meet their neighbors on frequent walks with their dogs around the block. We would love it even more when we have a safe place for our dogs to freely roam off leash.
Richmond is proud of its reputation as one of the most pet friendly cities. It is nice to have publicly supported dog parks in Byrd Park at Barker Field and at the recently opened Church Hill Park. Certainly the Fan, Museum District and Malvern Area have enough dog lovers and tax payers to support another dog park in the vicinity. Please consider making the field at Thompson and Kensington a permanent dog park.
Let your voice be heard at one of the upcoming hearings on the Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

Hurrah! Fresh gravel laid in alleys!
I drove home to a beautiful sight today - fresh gravel has been laid in the alley between Patterson and Park. No longer does the alley drive resemble a pot-holed road in the developing world. On the downside, my idiot neighbor already left tire tracks while speeding through the gravel, so the benefits may be short-lived.
Have other alleys been similarly repaired?

Is the Carytown vacancy rate actually down?
Richmond BizSense has an analysis of the vacancy rate in Carytown. In three months, their analysis shows that vacancy rate has declined from 22 empty spaces to 17. Their rate doesn’t include square footage changes, but indicates improvement nonetheless.
The article also states that some new stores are headed our way, including “Fringehome” and “EmbroidMe.” Anyone have the deets on these?
Thanks tipster John for the heads up.

Signal @ Boulevard and Monument getting a much-needed upgrade
Boulevard and Monument is one of the most dangerous intersections in the city. People often violate the no left turn rule, and cars rip through the intersection trying to make the light. Also, it’s a nightmare for pedestrians, as the street lacks walk/don’t walk signals.
From Richmond DPW…
Crews will replace two existing pedestal poles with new mast arm poles, which will significantly improve motorist and pedestrian safety at the intersection. This project is expected to be completed by Friday, October 17, 2008.
Expect some delays over the next month.

Cars plow into old Urban Artifacts store; will this delay River City Cellars’ expansion?
RTD reports that two cars smashed into the Cary street storefront where Urban Artifacts used to be. They have a pretty good picture on their site.
River City Cellars is planning on expanding into the Urban Artifacts place - this expansion has been going on for sometime. My emails to them have gone unanswered, and I wonder if this development will affect their expected open date.
