Stuzzi Opens on Monday

Posted on | June 6, 2010 | No Comments

For those who have been waiting for Pizza Napoletana in Richmond, your wait is over. Stuzzi is officially opening its doors on Monday.

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the soft opening and it is was pretty darn good. The pizza is pretty different. It’s somewhere between 10″-12″. Expect the pie to have round qualities but do not expect it to a pretty circle. The crust is light and bubbly. It has a slight char from the 1200+ degree oven. The flavors are simple with the Italian tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, and extra virgin olive oil. That is the base to basically every pizza they serve. Because the crust is so light, it only takes minutes for the center of the pie to soak up all the yummy goodness.

Stuzzi does have some solid pasta dishes and other items, but I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you to go there fro the pizza. That is what is going to make or break this restaurant.

There are still a few things that remain to be seen. I ‘m not sure of the hours of operation although I have been told that they will be open 7 days a week. Other than that, I would expect business to be busy on the weekends. I would shoot to try in the middle of the week.

Going Greek?

Posted on | June 4, 2010 | No Comments

Ok…. It’s slightly west of West of the Boulevard, but it’s too close to be ignored. The 34th Annual Greek Festival is being held this weekend at the Saints Constantine and Helen’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Malvern Ave (between Cary and Grove).

The times are as follows:
Friday June 4: 11:00am – 10:00pm
Saturday June 5: 11:00am – 10:00pm
Sunday June 6: 12:00pm – 7:00pm

If you are one of the 5 people who have never been to the event. Make sure you are ready to drink cheap wine and snack on some yummy loukoumades (honey covered doughnut holes). Also know that it gets very crowded, so it would be to your benefit to visit during non-peak hours.

Have fun!

Sunday Breakfast at Weezie’s Kitchen

Posted on | May 31, 2010 | 3 Comments

One of the joys of being a parent with young children is that “sleeping in” means 7 AM. So when looking for breakfast out options in Carytown, I often feel limited. Can Can is usually an early opener, except on Sundays. They hold of until 9 AM. NY Deli opens at 9 on the weekends. Who knows when Galaxy Diner actually opens?

Fortunately, I was able to convince my young man child that Weezies is where we needed to go, and it really did not disappoint. Read more

More Information on Car Theft

Posted on | May 28, 2010 | 2 Comments

A local resident sent me an email telling me that his wife’s catalytic converter was stolen from her Subaru Tuesday night (3/25/10). Not sure if it is related to the string of other car thefts, but I was under the impression that the other thefts were money, iPods, and accessories. It didn’t appear to be car parts.

Stuzzi Opening in Early June

Posted on | May 19, 2010 | 2 Comments

I talked to part-owner Peter Caserta this weekend and he told me that the opening date for Stuzzi will be on June 7th.

Stuzzi is the new pizza place on the corner of Belmont and Ellwood (the old 1 North Belmont). Stuzzi will feature Pizza Napoletana, which is a diversion from the NY Style that most of us are used to. While he says that he has no more reservations available for the early weekends, he assured me that he is leaving spots available for “people in the neighborhood.” Read more

Preschool Consolidation to Affect WOTB Residents

Posted on | May 18, 2010 | No Comments

In a recent move, Richmond Public Schools decided to consolidate 5 preschool programs into one environment. The affected schools include: John B. Cary, William Fox, Mary Munford, Clark Springs, and the PDC in Church Hill. The new consolidated school will take place at Maymont Elementary.

The consolidation was said to be a money saving move.

It appears that some parents are not happy about the move.

Was this a good move by the school board?

Public Safety Update

Posted on | May 12, 2010 | 1 Comment

We have been advised that several armed robberies and one attempt occurred over the weekend in the Fan and Museum Districts. Some of these robberies occurred during ‘normal’ hours when residents are likely following regular routines.

This story on NBC 12 revealed that in most cases, “the thieves started talking to the victims. They asked if the people had a cigarette or a light. This was just a pretense, and then the guns came out.” Read more

Looking for Short Wait in Your ER

Posted on | May 11, 2010 | No Comments

No one likes going to the emergency room, and no one likes waiting at the emergency room.

In an effort to help educate local residents about the “real wait times” HCA has developed a new texting option that lets you know what the current wait times are at the 3 nearest HCA hospitals.

To use the service, just text ER to 23000. You will get a message back requesting your zip code. Reply with your 5 digit zip code and you will immediately receive the wait times.

The reality is that we have underused Retreat Hospital in our backyard and the wait times are very palatable. I have tested the service twice and have received back 10 minutes and 0 minutes.

Sports Roundup

Posted on | May 10, 2010 | No Comments

The Flying Squirrels went 4-3 this week. They split their 4 game set at home with the division leading Altoona Curve and then took 2 on the road at Harrisburg before dropping the finale yesterday. Daryl Maday improved to 5-0 this season with a solid 7 inning performance on Friday. Giants prospect Clay Timpner continues to pace the team offensively. He is currently sporting a .459 BA.

The Richmond Revolution continued their tear by beating up on the Maryland Maniacs once again. The final score was 55-39 and was highlighted by 2 returns from DB Demarcus James. He returned the opening kickoff to the house and then returned an interception for another score later in the game. The Revs are 8-1 and one win away from clinching a playoff birth. They will play next week on the road vs Western Michigan before returning home on the 22nd.

The Richmond Kickers managed a 1-1 tie with Real Maryland Monarchs on Saturday. Matthew Delicâte tallied his 5th goal of the season, but the team could not manage to score again after Maryland tied the game at 1-1 on an own goal. The Kickers will face the Monarchs again next week in Maryland and will return to Richmond on the 21st to play the Charlotte Eagles.

SECCO IS OPEN- Finally!

Posted on | May 8, 2010 | No Comments

Secco has finally opened its doors and is serving food AND drink, no thanks to the City of Richmond that has made this process hell.

I’ve been warned that things may be a little bumpy over the next couple days, but she said to feel free and stop by…. The place is very cool, the drinks are cold, and the food is yummy.

I’ll write a more thorough review after a few visits.
