Ok, who is stealing my Netflix?

Is it you?

For the past two months my Netflix delivery has been sporadic at best. When I do get my discs they are opened on one end and resealed with blue painter’s tape. Some data points:

  • My wife and I each have our own queue’s. Thus far only my movies have been tampered with.
  • The tampered DVD’s show up with the rest of the mail.

I think four things could be happening. 1) Someone is waiting until my mail arrives, sneaking over to my house, stealing my netflix, watching them, and then putting it back after another batch of mail arrives. 2) The postman is stealing my netflix. 3) Someone at the post office is stealing my netflix, watching them, and then putting them back in the mail. 3) Someone at Netflix is stealing my netflix, watching them, and then sending them out to the mail.

Anyone else having troubles or suggestions on what to do?

  1. We’ve recently had two of our Netflix DVDs not arrive. We had to report them lost to Netflix and await a re-shipment. This is the first time in several years this has happened — be interesting to see if the lost/resealed DVD thing is happening to others…

  2. Which of those is most likely to have painter’s tape? I would say a neighbor.

  3. Ross,

I am not taking you netflix.

  4. I had a Netflix go missing - reported it and had it replaced, but we’d had problems with someone stealing mail from our building period. I’d never had a problem getting my netflix on time previously. And since the main door to my building has been kept shut (and therefore accessible only by key) I have not had any go missing since.
I know a lot of people in the Fan/ Museum Dist have had mail theft issues and have gone the route of a P.O box as a result.

  5. I never lost a single piece of mail until I moved to my current apartment. In six months I’ve lost three Netflix DVDs (and had about half of them come late) and had small packages delivered to me already opened. Now, I’m virtually certain most people wouldn’t recognize various kinds of yarn as valuable or not, but it is frustrating when you’re never *quite* certain if you got everything a loved one intended to send you. The worst was when some non-USPS courier service left my modem “outside” my door before I even moved in, then refused to apologize when it was stolen. There are three doors the box could have been left near, two of which are totally visible from the street.

At least I can proudly say mine is the only mailbox in the building that isn’t broken.

Ross: If moving isn’t realistic, get a PO box. Small ones are $34 for six months, and the post office my box is in has a 24-hour lobby.

  6. Well here is a thing: I don’t think anyone is stealing them (although to hear that people are having mail theft problems is disheartening) because they are eventually putting them back into the mail. If I were stealing Netflix I’d sure just keep the disc. I mean free dvd, right?

  7. Ross,

I’ll be honest. The thought of stealing your Netflix has corssed my mind. I see it sitting there hanging out of your mailbox, and I think “hmm…” Now don’t get me wrong, the thought never got past the “ha, that’d be funny” stage. If I had borrowed your Netflix, it would’ve been a ‘crime of opportunity’; its like a big red billboard on the front of your house. It practically begs to be stolen.

I, too, have had trouble getting mail. I haven’t recieved my 2007 personal property tax bills from the city. I thought having moved from an apartment down the street cauesd it, but I’m slowly realizing that mail delivery to our street is sub-optimal. I’ve spoken with the mailman; he appears to be the nicest man in the world. When I called to get my forwading from the apartment to the house, he spoke with me personally and ensure that all the mail will be transferred. I also missed a Comcast bill and have yet to recieve a Verizon FIOS bill (its been since April 1–I think I owe them a call). Perhaps its at the post office. idk.

Provided your Netflix mail is being stolen off your porch as a ‘crime of opportunity’, I suggest getting a bigger mailbox or at least move it to so it faces the door like mine.

    Also your neighbor,
    Daniel

  8. Daniel!

We just got a bigger mailbox this weekend so that should help (maybe).

Also, I have yet to receiver a FiOS bill. Its been about three months for me too, although I think they charged my card for 300$ which sounds about right. But honestly, a bill would have been nice.

Thirdly, we never got our personal property tax bills either. It turns out you have to call the Department of Taxation and change your address separately from the DMV. Val says it takes “1000 phone calls to fix it.” Also they will kindly transfer your account to a collection agency and charge you late fees if you don’t change your address. Yay!

  9. I heard the same story about the city’s address change issue. DMV kindly notified them when I moved from the county to the city, but not when I moved within the city!! Even if the they mailed it down the street, the mail should have been forwarded.

I know all about the letter from the law firm; thats how I knew I owed money. It sure sucks having 2 new cars when that bill comes (or doesn’t come) around.

I hope your new mailbox stops the tardiness of your flicks.

  10. regarding Daniel’s comment ” I haven’t recieved my 2007 personal property tax bills from the city. “…

… I didn’t receive mine either. It caused me all kinds of problems renewing my car registration at the DMV . I think there’s somthing shady going on with the city’s car tax system…. at least with how they send out the bills.

  11. Maybe the peeping tom stole your Netflix.

  12. I haven’t had a problem with Netflix because my DVDs are placed in my mailbox now but I have had several packages stolen. A mail thief is definitely working our area. Once there was only a 20 minute between when my package was delivered & when I got home. I have to pick up my packages at the post office now so I receive them since I’m not usually home when they are delivered. I’ve lived in my apartment for a little over 4 years without a problem until recently.
