Mayor Wilder goes on offense
In an email to the city today, Mayor L. Douglas Wilder continued fighting back against his critics, including those on City Council and the School Board. He pointed to the successful city audits that have cleaned up corruption and tax dollars saved.
The next few months will be critical to how the balance of power in Richmond will sway for years/decades to come. Wilder hints that he will continue to flex his muscles as chief executive of the city, but it’s for the courts to decide how much power will reside with him as they hear cases brought against him by both the City Council and the School Board.
Meanwhile, Wilder will continue his onslaught against corruption, this time pointing City Auditor Umesh V. Dalal in the direction of the public school’s procurement process. (The RTD has a nice article in Sunday’s paper about who this auditor is and what makes him tick.)
Today’s email also included a video link where the Mayor talks for 3 minutes mostly about his vision for schools. He mentions that he proposes building 15 new schools that would be ADA-compliant to replace existing schools. While it’s hard to argue against building schools, 15 new ones sounds way too high.

Go Wilder GO! I like it when people, even politicians use democracy properly, he’s doing what he says he’s doing, making it public, and inviting the check and balance system in to call the shots on any disputes.
I agree to a point. But what about the Arts Center boondoggle?

I say the city should stay out of some things… Now the arts center has been lacking and I read that they just hired a new high salaried person to run it with no previous experience in that field and honestly get some people who know what they’re doing. I’m a proud board member of the Byrd Theatre Foundation and each person is in an area in which they excel. Keep it simple, and when you’re stumped… bring in an expert.
