Is 4-hour parking in Carytown the answer

Posted on | June 27, 2008 | 2 Comments

The Carytown Merchants Associate met recently with the Richmond Economic Development Committee and the RPD to talk shop, and a lot of interesting ideas came out of it. One of those was the possibility of 4-hour parking on Cary Street versus the 2-hour standard today.

4-hour parking would solve most of the problems – plenty of time for customers to catch a movie, have a meal, and do some shopping without moving their car. The restriction would also keep people from monopolizing spots all day long.

I think that 4 hour parking is a good idea, but is not a panacea for bringing more people to Carytown. I’ve stated on more than one occasion on this website that what attracts people to places is not great parking. What attracts people to places is simply more people! Many of the most successful streets in the world have terrible parking. Carytown could use 1 or 2 more parking decks and have flex parking in the two grocery store lots. An article in today’s NY Times gives credence to Paul Goldman’s idea for a pedestrian Carytown: Check it Out!
