Free shuttle from Carytown to Shockoe Bottom starts today
Today marks the maiden voyage of “To the Bottom and Back,” a free shutle bus from Carytown to Shockoe Bottom and back (with stops in the Fan). The first trip starts at 5 PM and runs throughout the evening.
I’m not sure who’s sponsoring the bus or how the economics work, but we’ll see. If you take the bus, let us know what you think.

a bus to shockoe bottom…when one can simply walk to robinson street…huh? what does shockoe bottom have to offer…
This is a completely speculative guess, but they might be getting grant money for running a DUI-avoidance service, per their site “We also hope to reduce DUI and DUI related accidents…”
There used to be a service (run by Jim Congable), “222-MUCH” that you could call and they’d come pick you and your car up at a bar and take you home. I believe it was funded with such grants so this might be in part something similar
I rode this last night and it was amazing to ride from Carytown to the Bottom without having to worry about parking. The people running it were really friendly and I wish them all the best! I expect I might be riding it often.
My friend Cameron Parker documented it here: http://omgwtfrva.net/2009/08/14/to-the-bottom-and-back/
I saw the buses running Friday and Saturday night. Big green and black school buses. Not exactly first class, but hey, it’s free.
And I’m sorry Huh, but the Slip and Bottom offer far more options than Robinson Street. And a much easier bar-hopping experience than the spread out nightlife of the fan (or virtually dead post-dinner Carytown). Why not give people a free and safe way to enjoy both areas without having to find parking twice?
