Fleets horribly mismanaged says Richmond City Auditor

The City of Richmond had its fleet-management department audited - basically the purchase and maintenance of every city vehicle. The results are not too surprising - it’s completely mismanaged.

The auditors made 54 recommendations, some were as simple as “Prohibit departments from using premium and plus grades of fuel except where required.” ~70,000 gallons of premium were purchased last year, while only a handful of vehicles required premium.

My favorite recommendation was #30- “Encourage the use of personal vehicles for the City business where appropriate.” I mean seriously - why are we funding cars for many city workers? The report suggests motor pools and other ideas should city workers need transportation while on the job, and sets minimum thresholds for job-related travel to be eligible for a city vehicle. Bravo.

See NBC12’s news story here. You can read the full audit report here.  RTD has an article about possible criminal prosecutions as a result here.
