Fire station serving CaryTown has last fire pole

The RTD has a great article in today’s paper about Fire Station #12, serving the Fan and CaryTown, and their fire pole, the last one in operation in Richmond.

Apparently, the tradition of fire poles is less about quickness, and more about saving costs (it’s cheaper to put the firemen upstairs than to buy more property to keep everything on the same floor).

Sure, there are other fire poles in town, like at Gallery 5, which is the site of Virginia’s oldest fire station, but artists are the only ones shimmying down that one.
