It can be said that the Mayor’s Office made many errors in its negotiations with the Atlanta Braves and planning for a new stadium. Well, chalk up another one.
The mayor fired off this angry press release today, claiming that the Braves negotiated in bad faith.
Richmond Braves Involved With New Ballpark Plan In Georgia For Past Two Years
Mr. Mike Plant, executive vice president of the Atlanta Braves, this afternoon notified Mayor L. Douglas Wilder that his organization had been involved with Gwinnett County, GA officials for the past two years in planning for a new ballpark there.
Richmond officials had been approached by baseball teams as recently as two months ago, but did not actively pursue the opportunity because they believed they were negotiating in good faith with the Richmond Braves.
Given recent developments, the City will pursue all options and has already received calls from at least two organizations.
“There will be a baseball team in Richmond,” said the Mayor.
The mayor is surprised that the Braves had a backup plan? Good managers understand the necessity of a backup plan. The mayor sure wishes he had one right now.
Yes, Mayor, there will be a baseball team in Richmond. However, we may be stuck with a single-A rookie league team. Perhaps an Independent League team with some washed-up veterans.

Looks like Braves will pay Gwinnett County $250K per year and have a $38MM stadium built for them. The domain name gwinnettbraves.com was purchased on Thursday.

I say we use this as an opportunity. Forget baseball though. Get Richmond to build a stadium there and get VCU to provide the football team. Start something that can’t be moved to another city. Start something that would draw way more fans than the Braves games ever could.

YES TOTALLY. I’ve been saying for years VCU should buy UR’s stadium and start a football team. Aren’t they one of the largest public schools in the country without a football team?

Word on the street is that the Braves offered Richmond $750K per year. Our public officials can’t get anything done.
