See, I resent this title. Men don’t think twice about walking alone at 1 am, but because she’s female, it’s not okay? Yes, it’s a good idea to walk in numbers if you can, but that’s not always possible and it is eternally frustrating to be an independent woman who needs to go places at night alone.

I wouldn’t walk by myself at 1 am anywhere in the Richmond city limits.

Holly,
I think you might be reading a little bit too much into this.
The title of the article doesn’t say “women, don’t walk by yourself @ 1:00 a.m.”
I agree with Sam. I’m a man, and I wouldn’t even think of walking home by myself at 1 am.
Calling a cab is the best bet for any gender. Richmond needs more of them. Or at least more awareness that they do exist, and can be called.

The obvious solution is for more Richmond residents to carry firearms and other concealed weaponry when recreating in the streets after 1 AM. An independent woman in Richmond needs to be armed with a gun in order to shatter the glass ceiling of safety in Richmond.

forget cabs! Did you know a rickshaw will take you home for just $7, provided it takes no more than 10 minutes?

I find the best defense is to walk like you going somewhere with purpose. 9 times out of 10, a defiant, “get out of my way” strut will get you home safely…

I took a conceal and carry class and the guy teaching it has a house in the fan. He said he carries a tiny flashlight and turns it on when walking to and from a bar and he points it at every alley he sees and shrubs hanging past a sidewalk. He also only takes sidewalks along the street and recommended to our class to do as bopst said and walk with purpose (hate to think how my purpose walk looks when wasted outside corner cafe). His last bit of advice was to look people directly in the eye, perps do not like to be identified and it can disarm them. Hope that is helpful!
