Digital billboard lights up I-195

Posted on | November 10, 2008 | 13 Comments

Have you noticed the new digital billboard illuminating I-195 about a half-mile south of the Laburnum exit? It’s facing both directions and is currently advertising space availability and the billboard company’s name (Lamar).

I must say, it was sure effective distracting. I hope we won’t see more pile-ups on I-195 N during morning rush hour and I-195 S in the evening.

Was this part of the deal Lamar made with Wilder and Council to finally take down the ILLEGAL billboard on the 95 James RIver Bridge?

    From Scenic Virginia’s website:

“In November 2004 Scenic Virginia helped defeat an attempt by Lamar Advertising to secure a Special Use Permit for a billboard along I-95 in Richmond that has been illegal since the day it was erected in 1977 and that has earned more than $1 million in revenue since that time. We are now working with Richmond’s administration to bring down the billboard.”

Perhaps Velvet could rent the space to go along with the Hummers & the spotlights.

…and on that unpleasant topic, I ran into Sam Whatever last time I was in RIC. He’s a real butthole. FWIW.

I’m sure glad Sam Moore abandoned his plan to turn the old Julian’s into Velvet 2.

Young college girls in short shorts and / or halter tops riding bikes is also a distraction. So what is your point?

scott burger- i cant believe that billboard is still up, it primarily advertises the VA Lottery, what a joke. that billboard just ruins the view of the city at night from 95. The govt. as usual is wrong.

Yep. The fact that the ILLEGAL billboard is still up on Mayo Island is a sign that corporate money still trumps citizens in this town. LAMAR ADVERTISING IS NOT A GOOD CORPORATE CITIZEN. It makes a mockery of justice and democracy. This is part of the reason that, while I support the new Downtown Master Plan, I am also pretty skeptical that it will make a difference.

The billboard is visual pollution, as is the Mayo’s Island sign.

THe City Attorney’s Office should prosecute.

Lamar is trying to force the City to pay for THEIR ILLEGAL billboard.

it would be cool if they put up so many billboards that you couldnt even see the city skyline from 95, just ads- . the sickest part about it for me is the mayo billboard is for the f-ing VA lottery, it proves the govt. is evil
