Comcast’s monopoly ends. Huzzah!

From Richmond.com.

Richmond City Council voted Monday night to approve a cable franchise agreement between Verizon and the city for the next 15 years. The passage of the ordinance ends the de facto monopoly that Comcast had on cable services in the city.

Finally some competition. In addition to that, I (3000 block of Grayland) can get the new Verizon FiOS fiber optic service. It looks like we will have a couple options of highspeed internet soon.

  1. I would love to leave Comcast for Verizons Fios - but then my Cable Rate will go up… Is Verizon going to offer HD? Or maybe some channels that Comcast doesn’t offer - like satellite does?

  2. Yeah there are a tonnn of Fios channels. I’m pretty sure you can get tv, phone, and i-net all through the fiber. Probably at an introductory rate lower than Comcast. I’m not sure what their long term rate is though.

If I could get cable + inet for 80$ I’d be pretty happy.

  3. Oh man. that would be super sweet. Maybe it will make comcast lower their rates?

  4. They installed the ol’ Fios wires in my apartment (3500 Stuart) this week… I’m hoping some good deals will come out of it
