I think if I were a chef (laugh) I would be upset if some guy just dumped salt and pepper on something I made before he even tried it... but after he tried it and he wanted salt/pepper -- no prob... If someone asked for ketchup he told them it was an insult to the cook (which was usually him) and likened it to asking a Chinese cook for soy sauce.
