Benjamin Johnson resigns

From the Mayor’s office…

Mayor L. Douglas Wilder today accepted the resignation of City Director of Emergency Management Ben Johnson. He will be replaced by Deputy Director Anthony McLean.

The Mayor today also instructed the Finance Department to halt the longstanding policy of formulaic increases for all auto allowances. All future auto allowances will be increased only upon review and approval of the Mayor.

Mayor Wilder, upon being informed that his personal auto allowance was still in force after he was provided with security, discontinued his allowance and will return such funding originally allotted to him by Council upon the creation of the Mayoral post in 2005.

The Mayor will repay to the City all monies assigned to him since the Executive Protection Unit, established by Chief Rodney Monroe in the summer of 2005, began providing the Mayor a police vehicle for City business.

The Mayor has not received a cost-of-living increase in his salary since taking office. He rejected a Council-approved $25,000 raise in 2005 after a proposed $50,000 raise was brought forth by Councilman William Pantele.
