Belmont Food Shop- Are We Excited?
So a new specialty grocery store and deli is opening on Belmont Ave- 27 N. Belmont to be exact. The idea is to provide locally sourced food to the community. They have a boxed lunch menu, but the building is still very empty. Not sure what is going on. Does anyone have the scoop?
In the meantime, check out their website…..

$15 for the box lunch—yikes!
I was wondering about that. It is not geared towards the average joe.
Hours: 10:30 AM – 6 PM M – F, no weekend hours? Yes, not for the average working Joe.
I hate to bash this place before they’ve even opened the door, but $15 for a sandwich, side and drink is a little steep don’t you think?! Just a mile away Sally Belle’s offers box lunches (sandwich, potato salad, deviled egg, cheese wafer and cupcake) for half the price!
The scoop on the food shop is- it’s a take out sandwich shop that offers delivery lunches. The zoning allows retail/commercial, so dining in isn’t an immediate option, but it is open to the public, so come in and check it out. It’s new and in our neighborhood. Mike(founder)
Sure, I think the comparison to other box lunch joints will make this place a tough sell, but I also think there are enough folks in Richmond to support a niche place like this if the food quality is high.
The point of this place seems to be more than simply boxed lunches – it’s boxed lunches with lots of regionally-sourced (stop calling Polyface Farms local when the butcher down the block gets meat from Hanover County) ingredients that aren’t necessarily cheap factory-farm foods.
I want to try it out when I get a chance (the hours do make it tough for a working stiff like me), and I’ll let the quality of the food tell me whether the asking price is fair.
Try their watermelon popsicles (3 layers: watermelon with dried currents, peach, and honeydew so it actually looks like a slice of watermelon!) Only a dollar and absolutely addictive!!!
Super nice owners!!
They must have taken some flack cuz the box lunches are now $12!
The price of not buying local food at a fair price, is our entire economy and the planet. Local goods, local owners, local support required. Now we can put this “Big Box Carytown” argument to rest and get behind Let’s “Lunch-Box Carytown!” Congratulations on your (soft) opening. I’m telling all my friends.
