Weezie’s attempts to find the cure for hiccups

Any restaurant experiences a few hiccups when the doors open. Weezie’s Kitchen in CaryTown is getting their fill. Between staff and, ahem, pet issues, Weezie’s was starting out shooting the moon.
My friend Jen and I ate at Weezie’s last Friday. I ordered the meatloaf, while Jen ordered the Chicken cordon blue. My meal was [...]

Free Nintendo Wii available in CaryTown

You can’t take it home, but you can play Nintendo Wii free in CaryTown any night of the week.
“Hi” recently opened at 3433 W. Cary, in the former Blue Mountain Cafe. The bar’s flat screen carries the Wii. Definitely on my to-do list.

10 S Boulevard cracks me up

A squirrel eating watermelon.  SERIOUSLY.  A squirrel eating watermelon.
10 S. Boulevard has some great pictures.  How about the street sweepers?  They came through Richmond. I can’t tell the difference.

Oodles of orchids

Andi and I hit up First Friday this month and saw a fascinating exhibition at Quirk. Belmont Ave’s Chadwick & Son Orchids had Orchid Terrariums on display that were pleasing to both the eye and the soul.
The Chadwicks sure are the orchid experts. They wrote the book on orchids, literally.
They have an interesting business model [...]

City rec. league soccer

I’m looking to build a U12 team (rising 5th and 6th graders) who are not quite good enough for travel soccer but want something a little more challenging than standard recreation. We’ll practice twice a week (Monday, Wednesday 6-7 p.m.) at Humphrey Calder with games on Saturday. Please contact David Poole at dpoole4@gmail or 358-5934 [...]

From Cary Street to Broad and Boulevard to I-195 (plus Scott’s Addition), this ‘hood has got character. Take the WotBN photo quiz and test your skills at locating the following images. Leave [...]

Take a tour of Monument Ave

The RTD has a video tour of Monument Avenue. The tour primarily features the mansions along the route, as well as a background of the architects. It’s worth a look.

CaryTown Online Charrette – How would you make Cary Street even awesomer?

CaryTown is truly a magnificent place. The sheer quantity of independent shops makes it leaps and bounds better than the corporate malls in Short Pump and Stony Point. A stroll down Cary Street on a lazy weekend afternoon is both fun and refreshing. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, right?
Maybe CaryTown [...]

Plan 9 is selling its stash

Plan 9 Music is featuring a sidewalk sale during Sunday’s CaryTown Watermelon Festival. But it’s not just any sidewalk sale – they’re featuring thousands of CDs for $1 and $2 each. Also, they’ll have thousands of LPs in decent condition for a quarter each.
According to Plan 9 – “These are not albums that [...]

Oliver Hill monument talk begins

Well that didn’t take long. Lets hope that if we get an Oliver Hill monument on Monument Avenue he isn’t snatching away books from poor helpless children.

It’s Watermelon Festival Time!

Watermelon Festival is this Sunday from 10-6 in Carytown. If you been in previous years, you know it’s an event that can’t be missed. And, with temperatures topping 100 degrees, nothing beats watermelon.
Here’s a review of last year’s festival from virtualtourist.com…
They sure enough picked the right time of year for this festival. During the [...]

Introducing: WotBN crime map

In conjunction with John from CHPN I bring you the WotBN crime map. It looks kind of crappy right now but there are many improvements on the way as soon as I can get to them.
The data for CHPN and WotBN’s crime maps come from RichmondCrime.org. Soon most of Richmond’s community sites will be pulling [...]

Inspectors to re-visit Boulevard Bridge

The Boulevard Bridge is designed similarly to the one that collapsed in Minnesota and will receive an unscheduled once-over by state highway engineers.
The structure is called a “deck truss bridge,” and bridges of this type are being inspected across the country. Eleven other Virginia bridges will be inspected as well.
The one in Minnesota was previously [...]

Watermelon: Salt or no salt?

Now covering Scott’s Addition

We’ve decided to start covering the Scott’s Addition neighborhood here at WotBN. The duty falls to us because it’s geographically close, no one else is covering it, and we are probably awesomer than the other neighborhoods.
With all the news of development (movie theatre!) in the area hopefully we’ll have some interesting stuff to report. As [...]
