News from the Carytown and Museum District areas

Fence installed to protect horse statue

The droopy horse statue on Boulevard in front of the VHS has been the victim of people climbing up for a ride, but unlike some sculptures this poor guy apparently doesn’t hold up as well. Thick (and spider infested, I’m sure) bushes were planted around the base of the statue to deter climbers, but [...]

Wilder’s undefeated 3-0 record for legal battles was shattered today as a Richmond Circuit judge ruled that the Mayor could be sued by City Council and could not claim sovereign immunity.
Wilder didn’t make it through the day without firing off this response…

Update on Monument Ave “Illegal Parking Lot”

I emailed city council about the un-permitted parking lot on the corner of Monument and Colonial, and received a response. First District Representative Bruce Tyler emailed me…

This matter has been turned over to the Community Development Department for review and action. My understanding that this property is in the historic district and [...]

RBraves bomb-threat suspect charged

Turns out it wasn’t the Braves’ bullpen coach after all.  It was an Aramark employee, the company that runs concessions at The Diamond.
Police arrested and charged 39 year old male Stacy Wiggins with “threatening to bomb,” which is a felony.

More VHS Secrets revealed

Tipster Allison recently responded to our call for answers regarding the VHS exhibit Jamestown, Québec, Santa Fe: Three North American Beginnings. I asked, “Why Santa Fe and not St. Augustine?”
Turns out, Santa Fe is just cooler. The exhibit’s creators picked three cities from three cultures who started colonies in America. They could have [...]

I’d trade a piano store for a couple sweet restaurants any day

So CaryTown lost its piano store. But new businesses are moving in all around. Richmond.com reported on the following new restaurant openings around the area…

A bomb threat was called into the Braves game this afternoon around 3:30pm, and the park was evacuated at 4:07pm, according to the RTD.  About 4,000 fans were ushered across the street to the Greyhound Station, and the game was ultimately suspended until Monday at 1pm.
At the time, the Mud Hens of Toledo were whipping [...]

An interview with First District Councilman Bruce Tyler is featured in “The Columns,” The Museum District’s Quarterly newsletter. He intends on issuing an ordinance to ban pan handling in residential neighborhoods. Pan handling has gotten worse in the short time that I’ve lived West of the Boulevard. I actually saw two bums [...]

Karsen’s now open, reviews wanted

After the chef and staff left Zeus Gallery to do their own thing, I’ve been anxiously awaiting what they would come up with.  Karsen’s of CaryTown is the answer.
At urbanplanet.org, an observer wrote “there it was with a classy patio slam packed with people,” but the person never ventured inside.
Have you?  Let us know what [...]

Fire station serving CaryTown has last fire pole

The RTD has a great article in today’s paper about Fire Station #12, serving the Fan and CaryTown, and their fire pole, the last one in operation in Richmond.
Apparently, the tradition of fire poles is less about quickness, and more about saving costs (it’s cheaper to put the firemen upstairs than to buy more property to [...]

“The Paver” defended

Remember the Monument Avenue grassy field that was paved over (without city permission) by a Richmond landlord?  Well, he has at least one fan out there, who wrote a letter to the editor to Style Weekly full of praise.
The letter credits Bill Jefferson with rehabilitating many of the houses on Boulevard and contributing to the [...]
