More Coverage on the Low Cost Vet in Carytown

Posted on | August 27, 2010 | No Comments

This is a piece recently run on NBC12 about Helping Hands in Carytown

It’s stressful to find out your pet needs surgery, but the big shock can come when you get the bill.

Veterinary procedures can cost thousands of dollars, forcing pet owners to make sometimes difficult decisions. One local vet made it her mission to help you get More Bang for Your Buck.

“She likes to take advantage of when I leave the laundry basket on the floor and make toys for herself. She’s been known to swallow a sock or washrag,” said pet owner, Martha Childress.

And that was never a problem for 6 year old Bespin, until last March. Martha returned home after running the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K to find her dog acting strange. Read More…

The Overblown Ball Throwing Incident at Squirrels Game

Posted on | August 26, 2010 | No Comments

If you haven’t heard the story already, let me recap it for you. 1B Brandon Belt hit a foul ball into the upper deck along the 3rd baseline. Next thing you know, the ball is thrown from the upper deck onto the field and hits the Reading Phillies pitcher on the ankle. The pitcher was stunned. The coaches for the Phillies were angry. Most of the crowd was in shock.

According to the piece written in the RTD, the guilty party realized what happened and tried to leave the stadium. Stadium Authorities caught up with him and he was escorted out of the stadium. Apparently, he has since been banned from the Diamond for life. Read more

So a new specialty grocery store and deli is opening on Belmont Ave- 27 N. Belmont to be exact. The idea is to provide locally sourced food to the community. They have a boxed lunch menu, but the building is still very empty. Not sure what is going on. Does anyone have the scoop?

Another Byrd Fundraiser…..

Posted on | August 17, 2010 | No Comments

This according to NBC12.com……

Good news for the Byrd Theatre, after our story about the break-in and financial hardship of the Carytown landmark, Richmonders have stepped up with several fund raising projects.

Since our report, the donations have come flooding in. So far the total reaches $30,000. The amazing part is 85% of those contributions have been under $50. They come from regular people, giving what they can and that’s the theory behind an August 30 “Save the Byrd” fundraiser.

What would you do if you heard the heart of Carytown might have to close its doors? Mattie Coll had this answer on the way into Monday night’s showing of “Shrek” at the Byrd.

Posted on | August 5, 2010 | 3 Comments

From the Museum District Association Facebook Page:
There is an effort to save and support the Byrd Theatre this Sun., August 8, during the Carytown Watermelon Festival. To participate, stop by Richmond’s beloved theater and donate $1 per person to help them through these tough economic times and help spur needed renovations (and new seats!)

With 100,000+ expected at the Watermelon Festival, RVA should be able to rally around this community gem and help keep the doors open! You can stop by anytime (not just Sunday) to donate!

What to do with the Verizon Building?

Posted on | July 15, 2010 | 2 Comments

Carytown South resident Harry Kollatz provided me with this story and some commentary along with it. I’d love to hear your feedback as I think this story has legs and will be around for a while.

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/business/2010/jul/01/VERI01-ar-261132/

I gotta agree with most of the commenters: we don’t need a fourth grocery in Carytown. But I was alerted that there’d be zilch imagination employed with this effort with the phrase: “Maryland Financial Realty.” Come here, not from here. Still, there’ve been meetings with folks over in the Museum District (I’m over in WoBSoC, too fashionably scruffy or scruffily fashionable), and that’s to their credit, I suppose. But really. Do they want another grocery? It’s mentioned as one possibility in the article.

Some other uses:

• Boutique hotel with adjacent entertainment venue, like a jazz or acoustic performance venue. A Carytown/Fan/Museum/Scott’s Addition/ information center, and perhaps a museum-style exhibit about this section of the city’;s history.

* Local retail, that is, a Richmond home-grown department store. Not a bazaar with stalls, but several notches up, using Carytown retailers. Also with some kind of natural garden or water amenity to soften that ugly suburban parking lot. A kids playing lot. That whole end of Carytown resembles a hunk of outer burbia that landed on us.

* Live/work studio spaces and affordable apartments, with natural aspects as mentioned above. A New Media center, too.

• Any variation on the above. Or failing all this, an Old Hipster Retirement Home. They can sit out front on rockers and compare tattoos .

The cleanup will start on the exit ramp from 195 to Cameron St and continue through Carytown.

Just in time for the Watermelon Festival.

Talking Cheese at Elwood Thompsons

Posted on | July 13, 2010 | No Comments

RVANews features Ellwood Thompson’s cheesemonger, Dany Schutte, in her own words.

Never did I imagine in my youth that I would some day become a cheesemonger. A firewoman, police officer, even a minister, but nope, cheesemonger was not among the list. Actually, I wasn’t that interested in food, outside just eating it. Somewhere in my early to mid-twenties, while watching Jeff Smith (AKA The Frugal Gourmet on PBS) did the bulb above my head start to show some glow. Here was a man, a minister no less, teaching about food. Not just cook this, do that, but through story and history and sometimes even through ritual and mystery. He quoted Joseph Campbell frequently, and I was suddenly in love with cooking. I wanted to do this. I became a competent cook. Continue Reading at RVANews

WOTB- Sports Update

Posted on | June 24, 2010 | No Comments

The Squirrels continue their tailspin. They have lost 5 out of their last 6 and they currently sit in 5th place in the division. The good news is that they are only 3.5 games behind 2nd place Bowie and a potential playoff spot.

The Revolution had a banner week. They were named the best franchise in the IFL. Coach Steve Criswell won the Coach of the Year and QB Bryan Randall was named the league’s MVP. The Revolution begin post-season play this upcoming Monday evening, against the Rochester Raiders. Due to the league best 13-1 record, the Revolution will have home field advantage throughout the entire playoffs. League MVP Bryan Randall and rest of the Revolution will take the field Monday, June 28th at 7:05 to begin the team’s run to the United Bowl.

The Kickers beat up on Real Maryland on Tuesday night to earn them the chance to face DC United of the MLS on June 30. This will be quite the challenge for Richmond, who has had success against DC United in the past; however, with the game being played at George Mason University, I would suspect that DC United will have the home crowd working for them.

Would WOTB by the Proposed Changes to Nightclubs?

Posted on | June 22, 2010 | No Comments

So the City Council is considering a new ordinance on so-called nightclubs and dance halls. This ordinance is partially in response to the recent shootings down in Shockoe Bottom. This ordinance is also more difficult to get than a ABC license. For more information about this ordinance check out this report on NBC12.

For the life of me, I can’t think of any businesses in the Carytown area that would be affected. Now Scotts Addition would be a different story. Infuzion would need apply for the new permit. Do you think the new ordinance will help settle some of the violence issues?
